Supporting Children After Adverse Childhood Experiences

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) — such as abuse, neglect or household adversity — can have long-lasting effects on a child’s brain development, health and wellbeing. Research shows that the toxic stress caused by ACEs can be substantially buffered by stable, supportive relationships with trusted adults.

Supporting children after ACEs means creating safe, predictable environments, strengthening relationships with carers and teachers, and offering timely therapeutic and emotional support. Rather than waiting for difficulties to escalate, a proactive, relationship-based approach helps children feel safe enough to recover and reach their full potential.
